MEASURING
APEX OFFSET
Apex offset
is the distance that the top of the sphere is located from the true center of
the fiber core, and is measured in microns. Current standards require that the
apex offset should be less than 50 microns from the fiber center. It can be
estimated by visually finding the center of the first order fringe at the top of
the sphere, and then locating the center. The center should fall within a circle
that is approximately 80% of the diameter of the fiber. For optimum results, the
center should be held to within 25 microns of the fiber center.
